Sermon Notes-Faith

Your faith has made you.

Your faith has made you a child of God. John 1:12
Your faith has made you an overcomer. Revelation 12:11
Your faith has made you victorious. 1 John 5:4
Your faith has made you Spirit-filled. Luke 11:13

God has called us.
We are called to throw off anything that hinders us
from coming to Jesus!

Your faith has made you.

putting one foot in front of the other

i've often been asked
how i kept so upbeat and positive
while going through a cancer diagnosis
twice.
 while losing both of my breasts
and all of my hair
and just plain
being sick.

hmmm-
i have thought about this myself
actually!

i guess we never really know
how tough we are
until we NEED to know
how tough we are!

my dad passed away
when i was 30 years old
from cancer...

a mere eight years later
i received my first diagnosis:
"you have breast cancer"

my girls we are still so young
it was hard for me to even fathom
not being here for them

so
i kept waking up
and putting one foot in front of the other
trying to keep life
as normal as i possibly could

for my girls
for me
for my family

sure, my girls saw mom
getting sick-
after each chemo treatment

sure, they saw mom
lose all of her hair...

they were not immune
to it...
no they were right in the
middle of it all.
on the journey
right along side
my husband and i.

we
tried to keep up
daily living
and traditions...
i went to their ball games
volunteered in their classrooms
sang on the worship team
at church...

life just went on.

i woke up
and put one foot in front of the other
and kept smiling---
even when
sometimes, that smile
didn't reach my 'eyes'
i kept smiling!

it wasn't in me
to quit.
to give up.

i always had hope & faith.

years later
after i had been clean and clear
for a very long time
almost getting complacent about it all;
my husband was diagnosed with
cancer! *
are you kidding me?
really?

now, you know...
some people
could say,
"that poor family, haven't they had enough cancer?"

but, you see
never once did
i think
after losing my dad, or me having cancer twice
 or my husband too...

not once, did i ever even entertain the thought---
"why me?"
it would've been easy
to feel sorry for myself
but, truly what good does that do?

no, i wouldn't give up
HOPE!

i just keep putting one foot in front of the other
and
i kept looking UP!

~~~~
it seems like every day
i hear of someone i know
or someone who knows someone
who has just been given a
cancer diagnosis.
i do not think
anyone can say,
that they do not know of someone
who has not been touched
by a cancer diagnosis!
cancer is ugly.
just plain U.G.L.Y.
it doesn't care
if you are rich, poor,
old, young.
pretty or not so pretty
popular or not so popular...
if you are married or single,
have kids or have never had kids...
if you are
black or white...
republican or democrat ;)
cancer just doesn't care.
it is UGLY!
i do not know why
cancer seems so prevalent---
is it in our water, food the air we breathe?
why can we not find a cure?
i do not know.
but,
i do know this:
 that someone
out there
TODAY
maybe, right NOW---
is hearing those
ugly, ugly words...
"you have cancer."
i wish i could
wrap them tight in my arms.
pray with them,
just love on them...
sit with them
hold their hand
smile at them
and really just let them know,
they are not alone.
that someone cares.
that
they are loved!
no matter what
they are LOVED!
there is always
HOPE.
that no matter what
HOPE
shines through!
1 Corinthians 13:4-8 & 13
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails....
13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
2016 word
in the past i have chosen a word
to concentrate on for the year.
words such as:
smile
shine
hope
and last year's word which was
compassion...
i decided to really wait on God
what was the word He would whisper
in my ear?
i prayed about it.
that He would show me.
while doing my bible journaling
i decided instead of using my
many sets of devotionals
i would pray and then open the bible
to where He led me to.
i read the whole book from paul  to the
romans.
words kept popping off the page:
hope, faith, promises, glory, grace
believe and TRUST.
over and over
verses stood out about
believing and trusting.
believe. trust.
i journaled in three different bibles.
three completely different versions...
The Living Bible.
New International Bible
and The English Standard Version
all were consistent. all had the same result...
same words jumped off the pages at me.
hope, faith, promise, glory, grace
believe and trust.
today as i prayed for His words
to touch me.
TRUST was the underlying
meaning to all...
to trust and believe in Him and His promises.
my word for 2016
i believe is...TRUST.
A divine appointment?
a few days ago while sitting in a coffee shop
with my husband,
a gentleman we both know very casually,
began to talk to us.
we touched on all those casual, superficial topics
and then hit on the subject of retirement.
he had just retired and my husband shared that
he is entertaining the thought of retiring from farming
in the next 3-5 years...
the gentleman asked my husband what he wanted to do
with his spare time, in which my hubs replied:
"i would love to go on some mission trips, but
my wife isn't really interested"
which then turned the focus on me...and what
i wanted to do.
replying that i felt that i didn't have to go to
a third world country to be able to be used by God.
yes, i know...i have children serving as
full-time missionaries overseas
and yes...i am SO proud of them and the
work they do for Jesus and His Kingdom!!!!
and i would be proud too, of my husband
if he does indeed pursue
this after retiring---
i just don't feel the calling.
God hasn't called me, 'yet'
in this area.
i told this man that i felt called to reach out
to hurting women in my community.
that i was a two time cancer survivor and
felt that this was an area that i could be used in
and to turn something that was so hard,
into something used for 'good'---
letting Him use me.
reaching out to those in my own community
who have lost someone or who are going through
it right now.
 it is something i am passionate about.
i shared how sometimes people don't know what to
say or do to those who are hurting and so in turn
they are afraid and instead of reaching out
they recoil.
i told him how people should not to be afraid
to just smile, offer a hug.
you do not need any special words to say...
just offer
love. friendship.
let them know they are not alone.
we talked for a bit more and the gentleman left.
a divine appointment?
maybe.
a few minutes later...in he walked again
to the coffee shop and right up to our cozy spot.
he said, he was about to drive away when he
thought of a wife/mom/grandma in his church
that is going through a pretty awful cancer diagnosis
and the family is having a hard time dealing with
this eventual loss.
would i be willing to contact her?
the family?
he gave me her name and phone number and left.
that evening i thought about calling her but,
decided to read the family's webpage first.-
i then chose to reach out to her daughter,
and in this way, to this hurting family.
i offered myself, to help with meals, my friendship
and anything else they may need...
most assuredly offering my prayers.
i am letting God lead me in this situation right now.
giving me the words and actions to help
when and where i can.
yes, we can be the feet and hands of God
here in our OWN  community and ALSO in
countries that need to hear about
Jesus!
people need to know they are not alone
they are loved.
if we don't do it
who will?
have you heard the calling?
are you serving Him in your community?
or are you serving abroad?
are you letting Him use you?
how?
the sweet voice of God
it happened again.
i have had experience with the
whisper of God
in my life before.
sometimes it takes a while
for me to actually
listen and act on it.
but, every single time
He whispers someone's name
to me and i act on it?
W O W.
i mean, W O W.
the last couple days
i have had this tugging.
a simple tug of my heart
to contact a friend of mine.
and God---
God, whispered her name to me.
this time it only took Him
prompting me twice
before i acted on it!
today, i sent a simple text:
how are YOU today?
how is your Dad?
YOU are in my thoughts
and prayers.
is there anything i can do
to help?
B A M!
just like that i received a message back.
thanking me for reaching out.
saying she has been having a rough couple days
& could she call me this afternoon!
W O W.
God you are amazing.
You never cease to amaze me.
Thank you, God for never giving up on me!
For continuing to use me
and for helping me to not only
listen and hear your VOICE
but, to ACT on it.
I love you, LORD.
Thank you.
journaling through the bible.
i have been taking sermon notes
for our church's facebook page
about 4 years now.
i update the facebook page
and take quite extensive notes
during the sermon-
on monday morning,
i get out my journal and start to
decorate the notes i took,
which helps me to re-live the sermon
and study a bit more of what was preached.
it helps to really 'store it in my heart'.
when along came a community
i had no idea existed.
bible journaling!
since i enjoyed taking notes and making them
all pretty,
it seemed like an automatic fit for me
to study God's Word and then
worship through art!
i have grown so much in my quiet time
with the Lord.
bible journaling
helps me to study His Word
and to really store it in my heart!
art worship!? Yes!
 journaling my faith? Yes!
i encourage you if you have been feeling
a bit stagnate in your walk with Him,
having a hard time sitting and being 'still'
or need a bit of push
to open that bible and let Him talk to you...
to speak to your heart...
to start slowly-
and bible journal!!!
it doesn't have to be fancy
you do not need all the right products or doo-dads...
your hand-lettering doesn't have to be perfect-
you are doing this for you,
for your time in the Word.
for your walk with the Lord.
for your relationship with Him.
i leave you with some of my examples...
i usually share on my IG account:
https://instagram.com/melodymaeolson/
but, here are some of my favorite
sermon notes and  some of my
bible journaling in pictures!
Sermon Notes:
i have been highlighting in my bible for years.
i recommend dating your entries
because i came across this one
which i highlighted after i had lost my dad!!!
he died in November of 89.
i love that i dated this almost a year later!
+++
and then here are some of my
latest
bible journaling entries:
 this one below
shows me working out of three
separate bibles.
i am leaving one to each of my daughters.
it also shows that you do NOT need a special bible!
write in the columns or wherever
you feel like!
i hope this inspires you to journal
and get in the Word a bit more.
i know it has been a HUGE help in my life
and my daily walk with Jesus!
thirty-five
*love is-
this weekend my husband & i
will celebrate our thirty-fifth wedding anniversary!
sometimes it doesn't even seem possible
that we have been together that long.
i mean, that is a LONG time.
but, then i think about all the
memories; the good and the bad
that we have experienced together
-in sickness & in health.
he is really just a part of me.
the two make a whole.
i can't imagine my life without him!
no need to hit the rewind button.
no do-overs needed.
but, let me tell you this:
marriage is work!
*love is not proud.
i have been around far too many people who are just
trying to convince themselves and
all their friends on social media,
going on and on about their sweetie...gushing and oozing...
just how wonderfully perfect their marriage and their lives are!
okay...who are you trying to convince? me or you?
*love does not boast. is not self-seeking.
our marriage is good &
i am happy & content
but, i don't feel the need to convince myself or others
how happily married we are.
*love never fails.
marriage is a commitment and it does take work.
but, it IS worth it!
*love always trusts. is not easily angered.
i do not want my daughters (all married now)
to ever think it is a cake walk!
that we haven't had to work at it
because we have.
it isn't always
sunshine  & roses!
our faith in our marriage
and faith in God
have been the key to making it work!
we couldn't have done it without God.
or without our faith in Him and in our marriage.
*love protects. hopes. perseveres.
we love each other
and we both think our marriage is worth the effort!
*love is patient. love is kind.
i am more than happy to say that i still LOVE the man
that i said, "YES" to thirty five years ago.
we are blessed.
thank you, Jesus.
*it never fails.
1 Cor. 13:4-8 Love is patient, love is kind. smile.
the power of a simple
smile.
have you ever thought about
the simple act of smiling
at someone
and
what it can mean to the
receiver?
this week
i concentrated on offering a
smile;
in the crosswalks, the coffee shop,
 the grocery store, church,
while on my daily walks
 & to my own family!
the simple act
 of turning UP the sides of your mouth
i believe,
can actually have
 an impact!
we never know
what kind of day
someone may have had
and that simple smile
could really lift their spirits!
i try to look at things with the glass-half full.
it is just easier for me to do.
to not dwell.
i do NOT like to dwell on the ugly---
i just don't.
so i try to see the good.
the good
in the small things.
the good
in the little things.
the good
in the simple things.
most days it is pretty easy
for me to see at least
 a little something
that is
beautiful.
to savor
 sweet moments--
soaking in the
simple little things
that make me happy-
and
 to just disregard the uglies!
it is how i get through the day;
really it is!!
~~~~
now,  let's be honest,
some days
when the world seems
dark & the uglies
feel so BIG

well, let's be honest
it is a lot harder to do!

but, i try to remember to
look around me.

to see the beauty
that i know
is in every single day!

and. i. smile.

so how about it friends.

did you share a simple
smile with anyone?

did you notice
something sweet
as you went about your day?

did you take time
to soak in a sweet moment?

did you laugh?
share a kind word?

maybe it was something small
or
something simple
that made
you stop and smile.

as for me?

here are a few of my sweet moments
this past week:

salted caramel mochas. (with whip!)
completing a super-hero 5k. (costume and all)
 scarf weather!
colorful pumpkins in my yard.
coffee dates.
dinner dates.
worship music.
scented candles.
laughter.
starting a new book.
a warm fireplace.
 smiles shared
&
for daughters and son in laws who are
raising their children to know & love Jesus!

yes.
i. am. grateful.

yes.
there are reasons to smile.

yes.
sweet moments,
indeed.

memories. thankful. blessings.

it's the little things
in life.

the small moments
that turn into
big memories.

those are the times
to cling on to;
when the going gets
tough...
and we know it will.

those memories
are the things
to remember and hold on to.

my family now is grown.
they have all moved away
from the family home.
which is of course
just the way it should be...

it is the normal thing to do.

raise your family up
to be responsible, loving adults
who leave the nest.

i get that.
it is what us as parents, do.
we nurture. love. and then

we let them go.

all three of our girls
have married & moved away---
two of our 'birdies' have not only
left the nest,
but have flown
far away.

sometimes the melancholy
from missing them
kind of gets a bit overwhelming
but, i know in my heart this is
what they needed
to do, for NOW.

& i choose joy.
joy in their happiness.
joy in our family.
joy in the midst
of it all.

i know, and they know---
that the love of our family
holds us together
no matter the distance.

so, i cling to the memories
that i have.

we have so, so many GREAT ones!!
it is easy to do. :)

i love my family
more than words or pictures
could ever tell
and i am:
grateful
thankful

life on this earth
is good!

i am ever so
blessed---

yes, beyond measure!

not only are they
my blessings
here on this earth
but, forever i will be
with my family
with HIM
as well.

happy monday.

here are few
of my many blessings on
this earth.
